Indicator problem

Post by ash60 » Mon Jun 23, 2014 2:00 pm

I have recently purchased a 1973 MGB GT. Initially all was working well but yesterday the fuse blew so that the fuel gauge and indicators stopped working.
I replaced the fuse but on trying the indicators they flashed very quickly and the flasher unit got hot. Thinking that it was a faulty flasher unit I bought one from the local MG specialist and fitted it this morning. As before it gets hot within seconds and the indicators do not work.
If I disconnect the flasher unit the rest of the circuit, fuel gauge etc work fine.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the likely cause of the problem?

I would check each bulb separately. It sounds like you have a short in either the bulb itself or the bulb socket. Remove each bulb and replace it with a known good one, then try the flashers or indicators. If the flasher itself is getting hot it is because there is an excess amount of current being drawn, it will also make the flasher cycle very fast. Thanks Chuter
