Hi I had this very same problem.
It turned out the thread on the filter base was threaded. I had to get a replacement filter base in the end, as no matter how much I tried to tighten it or re-thread it oil would still leak. This was due to the last filter being tightened up too hard.
They are only meant to be put on hand tight - you shouldn't need to use a tool or anything to put the filter on.
It may be that yours is also cross-threaded. If you run a little oil around the seal of the new filter, then spin it on hand tight that should be enough to get it to seal...
